Financial Workshop

Raising Money Smart Tweens

How does your family handle talking with your kids about money?  When I was growing up,  the subject was taboo; all I knew was that my dad made it, the kids and mom spent it – end of story!  However, helping our kids today understand and embrace the concepts of cash, credit and consumerism is not only possible, but will help them build a strong sense of financial responsibility –which will help them live happier, fuller lives as they get older.

Today, kids of all ages are bombarded with messages from advertisers.  As a result, – most kids have a long wish list of things they would like to buy.  As kids get older, they have the ability to earn money through small jobs, such as babysitting, lemonade stands or helping neighbors with their pets while they are away.  If we combine the money made through these “jobs” with allowance and gifts of money – tween kids (8-14) can wind up with a significant amount of disposable income.

The question is:  DO THEY KNOW HOW TO MANAGE IT?  Research has shown that young Americans have spending power of $164 billion.  Despite this incredible purchasing power, only 12% of high school students receive a formal education in personal finance.  Money management is not something our kids learn in school and is really left up to YOU - the parents.  A solid money education is one of the best tools you can teach your children.  It will benefit them – and you – for the rest of their lives.

In this seminar, I will provide you with some basic guidelines and age appropriate tools and activities when talking with kids about money in a language they can understand.  I’ll break it down into fun, easy segments and provide you with valuable tips on how to talk with your tweens about money.  I will offer opportunities for your children to learn and put into action key concepts and skills as they relate to personal money management.  Your tween will practice and learn the following:

  • Setting a realistic financial goal
  • Develop a realistic plan to reach their goal
  • Create a budget based on current income and expenses
  • Enjoy the satisfaction of reaching their goal and become more money confident

My goal is simple:  teach kids the basics of earning, saving, spending and investing so they gain the skills and confidence to take charge of their life!!
